  • PSM to donate 100,000 corrugated galvanized sheets to quake victims

The Pakistan Steel will donate more than 100,000 corrugated galvanized sheets for the construction of temporary shelters in the NWFP and Azad Jammu Kashmir in the next one month.

Lt-Gen, Abdul Qayyum, the PSM Chairman, and Major-Gen Imtiaz Hussain, director- general engineers GHQ, at a meeting on Wednesday decided initially approximately 2,000 sheets of 24 to 26 gauges would be produced a day which would be increased to 4,000 sheets a day in few weeks. He told that the PSM instead of depositing cash in President Relief Fund would be donating one lac galvanized sheets for the construction of temporary shelters in NWFP and Azad Kashmir.

In order to check the price hike due to monopoly of the private sector in supply of this most essential construction material, the PSM management has indigenously designed some machines to produce corrugated sheets.

The PSM has also developed the capability to construct canvas bodies at its Lahore- based workshop, besides the PSM will also be able to reconstruct galvanized corrugated sheets in 950mm into 0.55mm/0.6mm into 2440mm/ 3000mm sizes.

In addition, cold-formed box section, 100mm into 5mm, channels 3 into section that is 140mm into 80mm into 5mm, 160mm into 80mm into 75mm will also be provided by the PSM for low-cost housing for use as beams and column, etc.

The Pakistan Steel is the only industrial organization in the country that can readily provide these construction material based on its capability to produce 100,000 tons of galvanized coils a year.
